The history of the United States Army's deployed gift program goes back to the early 1800s. At that time, Gifts from the enlisted men and women of the military were a common practice. In 1853, Major General George A. Custer, in command of all the western army troops stationed at Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin offered a cross-country gift party for his officers and men. Soldiers would often send their families home with items they had collected during their tour of duty. By 1919, there was an entire section on Gift History in the Department of Defense Soldier Personnel Record Book (SPB). This document included information on every soldier who had been decorated with a Purple Heart or Silver Star and their unit or regiment where they served. Many individual soldiers also left behind collections of donated goods and equipment which became known as "Gift Packs." This tradition continued into World War II when soldiers again contributed goods and services in support of their countrymen overseas. After World War II ended, many troops returned home to start families but not all were able to bring back large numbers of gifts like they did during World War I and II. Placentia, California is a census-designated place in Sonoma County, California. The population was 8,829 at the 2010 census. It is located about east of Santa Rosa and northwest of Napa Valley. The name "Placentia" is derived from the Latin word "plegen", meaning to lie down. The town was founded in 1887 by John Hargrave and others who withdrew from Bodega Bay after finding ammoniacal gas emitted by bacterial fermentation in that bay too dangerous to live near. They named their new settlement for Virginias mother Placentia (the name given to her by King George III as part of his gift to her upon her miscarriage). Milton Bradley, an American entrepreneur, developed Placentia Station into one of Northern California's wealthiest towns with a reputation for sophistication and liberalism. He donated land for the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1911; it functioned as a small research station until it became UC Davis Medical Center in 1948. At Placentias height there were 7 businesses employing over 100 people on Main Street alone; today only three remain: Placentias Coffee Company (founded 1914), Lighthouse Books & Music (founded 1946) and First Presbyterian Church (born 1892). In recent years several other small businesses have closed or relocated within the town limits: Murphys law office moved out onto Pacific Coast Highway adjacent to Interstate 80 while its predecessor Goodyear Tire & Rubber vacated its original buildings on State Street across from what is now Wells Fargo Bank; Radio Shack moved out onto Avila Road just inside the town limits before moving out again since 2007; Kmart pulled up stakes within view of the shopping center off Interstate 5 south between I-80 and US 101 Trucking had its building on Avenida de la Marina replaced by a housing development which opened in early 2016 but has failed to bring much business activity within town limits; Magellan Brewing Co., started brewing beer commercially in 1978 but ceased operations prior to 2018 when their main facility burned down; and Sears Holdings Corporation began opening stores within walking distance of downtown Placentia beginning in 1984 but discontinued this policy after two fatal fires at their Santa Rosa store
