The California Army National Guard's 7th Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Flags of California" because of their white and blue military uniforms, was first organized in 1846. The division was activated on November 15, 1849 at Stockton and served as a militia unit during the 1850s. In 1860, the division was moved to Sacramento and became part of the newly created Department of Central California. On January 1, 1861, the 7th Infantry Division became an infantry regiment within the newly formed United States Army. On December 17, 1861, General George Buell ordered all United States Armies in California to beorganized into brigades under his command. The brigade organization changed on February 17 when Brigadier General Edwin J. Porter assumed command of Brigade A which became brigadier general on March 6th. In 1863-1864 the division fought in the Mexican War against Mexico and participated in many engagements including Battle of Pueblo de Taos where they lost 14 officers and 278 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. In 1865-1866 they fought in Reconstruction Louisiana after it was ravaged by violence following the Civil War. They also fought during World War I with distinction earning three battle stars for service in Europe as well as two Distinguished Service Medals (DSM). They were demobilized after World War I ended but re-activated on October 8th 1938 as Headquarters Troop 3rd Cavalry Regiment CA ANG at Placentia under then Major General John Laughlin who had been commanding officer from 1934 until 1938 LtCol Charles Hinton who later served concurrently with MajGen Laughlin as Commanding Officer 4th Battalion CA Ang from 1961 until 1966 Col Eugene Wojciechowski from 1968 until 1971 LtCol Donald J.' McNamara until 1972 Col Michael Kappenberger from 1974 until 1976 Col Phillip Stutzman who served concurrent with MajGen Laughlin from 1978 till 1980 before becoming Captain USARANG on September 30 1984 Capt Dan McGee since 1987 The history of presents to members or units of an army goes back long before there even were armies! The regiment was re-designated as the 9th Infantry Regiment on February 17, 1919. Since becoming a local community within Los Angeles County, Placentia has experienced rapid growth and progress which has made it one of the most successful towns within that county’s borders. Significant redevelopment projects have taken place throughout the years including new businesses and residences being built on top of former industrial sites while also creating new civic amenities such as a library, daycare center, parkland and public square across from downtown.
