The city of Placentia, California was founded in 1871 by American parents George and Mary Ann (Kemnitz) Weiser. The town was named for the recently discovered egg-shaped planet Ceres, which they believed to be situated in the celestial hemisphere called Virgo. The Weisers were among the first settlers in what would become Placentia. The town quickly became a thriving community with a population of around 100 people at its peak in 1881. By 1907, however, the population had plummeted to just 10 people due to various factors including the Panic of 1907 and plagues such as yellow fever that year. Despite its low population count during its early years, Placentia continued to grow and develop over time. In 1906, the city built its first courthouse and jail. In 1912, it established its own school district which soon boasted several high schools and colleges within walking distance of each other. In 1916, Placentia became California's 24th state capital when Sacramento was moved from Stockton to San Francisco Bay City. During World War II, Placentia played an important role as a munitions plant located on Cannery Row on Highway 1 near present day Northwood Drive. The plant produced bombs used in both World War I and World War II. After the war ended in 1945, most of the plants closed down but Placentia kept going strong with a few small businesses left behind until finally closing down completely in1996 amidst economic problems caused by global competition and dwindling resources
