The population was 16,597 at the 2010 census and it is a small city with a relatively small size – only 1.2 square miles. It has a total population of just over 11,000 residents and 2,700 jobs. However, Placentia's main attraction are its waterside activities including swimming and fishing. Placentia was founded in 1887 by two brothers who were prospectors looking for new land to exploit in Sonoma County. They named their settlement after Placentia parish (a small village near Monterey) in England where they had been living while prospecting. The City of Placentia, California was founded on December 12, 1853 by Mormon pioneers. The city grew rapidly in population and development over the next few decades and became one of the largest in the United States. In 1912, Placentia was incorporated as a city with a population of just over 50,000 people. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Santa Clara River. During the war, Placentia played an important role in providing military supplies and services to allies and leading up to America's victory in 1945. After the war, Placentia experienced a period of rapid growth and expansion that made it one of California's most thriving cities. The city has since undergone various transformations including becoming an oasis for culture and business within Silicon Valley; experiencing significant gentrification during the 1990s; and becoming increasingly Latino during recent years.
The first Europeans to visit the area were in 1542, when Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed on a small island in the strait between California and San Francisco. He named it "Isla de los Fuegos" (Island of fire). The area was explored by Mexican settlers in 1823, who called it Rancho Cañon de la Brea. The United States acquired parts of Alta California from Mexico following the Mexican-American War in 1848, and established the western half of California as part of the new United States. In 1850, Placentia was platted as a town site by Lieutenant Colonel Augustus George Wellesley Hastings. The town quickly became an important transportation center due to its location at the mouth of Cañon de la Brea River. In 1861, during American Civil War, Placentia sided with Confederate forces against Union forces. After the war ended, many Placentians returned to their homes and businesses while others moved into nearby towns such as Menlo Park or Palo Alto. By 1870, Placentia had grown sufficiently large that it became its own incorporated city within US jurisdiction. That year saw also the opening of what is now known as Regency School District No. 1 which included much of what are now eastern Contra Costa County including parts ofplacentia
