Placentia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the city of Bakersfield. The name "Placentia" originated from the Latin word "pellere," meaning to give birth. The first settlers were Spanish who named the area San Lorenzo de la Placencia after Saint Lawrence (Lorenzo) of Assisi and his wife Philippine de la Cueva. In 1846, when California became a state, Placentia was given to Bakersfield by Governor Leland Stanford because it was located on Rancho El Camino Real which Stanford had purchased from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $5,000 in 1844. The post office at Placentia opened on September 15, 1848 and remained open until it closed on April 6, 1916. At that time it served as the only mail center between Bakersfield and Fresno. When Interstate 5 was built through Kern County in 1964, mail traffic shifted to the new highway and Placentia lost its post office competition; however, it retains its ZIP code 92336 today. In 1951-1952 a shopping mall called The Forum opened in downtown Placentia with anchors Sears & Roebuck and JCPenney.. In 1984-1985 an amusement park called Six Flags America plc., later known as Theme Park America plc., opened adjacent to The Forum which eventually closed down due to high costs associated with keeping up with other amusement parks around the country during that period of time... Placentia, California is located in the far northwestern corner of Los Angeles County and shares borders with Kern County to the east and San Bernardino County to the south. The population of Placentia was 397 in 2010, making it one of California's smaller villages. The village ceased to exist as a result of annexation by Riverside on February 1, 1912. The first residents of what is now Placentia were Native Americans who likely came from nearby Monterey Bay. A group of Franciscan missionaries landed at present-day Placentia in 1693 when they were seeking converts for their new mission station in Los Angeles. The original plazuela (town) was located on what is now First Street near Beach Boulevard. In 1847, Rancho Santa Anita was granted to Captain John Gifford along with other land grants including present-day Placentia. When Captain Gifford died in 1849, his son took over management of the rancho while his widow continued to reside there until her death in 1852. Captain Gifford's wife may have been named Maria de la Concepcion because she had an Indian husband who died young on the trip overland from Mexico City back home to visit her family during captain Gifford's voyage across America that year. Upon landing at Angel Island off southern California after crossing the Pacific Ocean aboard HMS " Dolphin" (the only ship then known to have made such a journey), Maria de la Concepcion met and married Juan Bautista Lopez y Pico, an Augustinian missionary from Manila whose vessel reached North America about this time; he journeyed westward from Point Reyes Station before finally reaching Mexico City some months later having crossed more than half way around Cape Horn! After living for some time with various Mexican families near Mission San Gabriel Arcangeli (now Downtown LA), Lopez y Pico moved upriver into what is today downtown Placentia where he founded a small chapel called Nuestra Señora del Carmelo as part of an effort by Spanish Friars Province XIIIto Foundacion de Nuestra Señora Del Carmelo de Monterey Bay on January 6, 1782 under Vicente Nieto y Valdivia located just north of Alhambra Street between Third Street & Fourth Street (). In 1853 Captains Elihu Burritt & Alexander Henschel chartered USS Constitution (1801-1860) moored offshore at Laguna Blanca Harbor while exploring inland waters adjacent thereto for silver discoveries; they became aware that large quantities of silver ore lay beneath the surface withinAlamosa Mountains which they named Cathedral Range after St Mary’s Cathedral also situated within Alhambra Heights vicinity northwest thereof—this being prior thereto preexisting name given by Comstock et al., dated November 2d [1848], for preeminently high mountain range lying immediately upon shoreline extending thence seaward unto Long Beach inclusive but not connected therewith generally speaking…In consequence thereof—after conferring further with their friends among our fellow citizens—they Accordingly petition Congress Apr 14th [1850] for Letters Patent covering all said mountains including any intervening valleys or hills forming connecting portions thereof With intent thereby securing exclusive mining privileges touching particularly upon rich deposits bearing 100% gold… Ulysses S Grant issued Letters Patent Mineral Rights District No 5 on December 8th 1850 authorizing Adrian Foley [of New York], Secretary OF State etc., Director General Mines Department etc., etc., ever since organized July 1st 1861 …This area encompassed approximately 160 acres….
