Placentia, California is a small town located in the North Central Valley of California. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. The name Placentia comes from the Latin word "pelo" meaning "place of childbirth." The town was founded on May 15, 1851 by Capt. George Prentice and his partner, John Ladd. Captain Prentice named it for his birthplace, Pelham in England. The first store in Placentia opened its doors on Main Street on October 5, 1851. In 1865, a post office was established at Placentia with Wm Hinton as the first mail carrier. The town experienced several boom years during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to agriculture and trade which led to growth in both businesses and people. In 1907, Mayor Smedley Butler dedicated a new library building on Depot Square which served as Placentia's downtown square until 1984 when it was replaced by the current Main Library building (). During World War II, Placetoria played an important role as one of two ports open to air transport troops and supplies entering Northern California through Stockton Airport (now Delta Air Lines) - also known as Camp Roberts Army Airfield (). There were no civilian casualties attributable to military operations here during that conflict; however Allied forces did suffer some damage after launching airstrikes against Japanese targets nearby Singleton Naval Air Station () northwest of Placetoria). The war brought economic boon to the town with new businesses opening up including a clothing factory by local businessman Harry “Dutch” Dooley in 1942 and an agricultural Implement Manufacturing Company soon afterwards – both still active today ().
