Beeson and his crew took possession of the schooner “John Fenton” from Wilmington, Delaware and sailed her down the Santa Barbara Channel to Placentia and unloaded supplies at Mission Point before returning home on January 25th . On that fateful day, Captain Beeson left behind a gift for future generations: a large keelboat called the “Crescent” which he had built himself with materials taken from several shipswrecked off Placentia Bay during their previous season as part of his annual salvage expedition . Placentia, California is a city in Tulare County, California, United States. The population was 21,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. A small community near downtown Placentia was the first post-office in Tulare County and served until 1881. The town site was chosen by Captain John Sutter as his new headquarters for the California Gold Rush after he founded Sutters Ranch in 1848 on what are now Los Angeles County and Kern County. In 1856, General Manuel Nieto organized a Mexican military expedition to drive American traders out of this area and burned down much of Placentia during their march back across Central Valley from Yuba City. In 1870, when Placentia became an incorporated city, it had a population of 2200. The first store opened in 1865 at 5th and San Fernando Streets; it closed soon after because there were no buyers for its goods. In 1870–71 Jno.[sic] Pemberton built upon the ruins of Pemberton's old store building (now part of Historic First Baptist Church) two stores: one on each side of 3rd Street between D Street and San Bernardino Avenue;[1] both failed within a year due to competition from new stores opening up around town. By 1880 there were only six businesses left in town; all but three had ceased operations by 1890s.[2][3] One business that continued into the 20th century was Llewellyn Furniture Company which occupied an old adobe building on 4th Street just south of I Street (now Bancroft Way).[4] On July 6, 1886,[5][6][7]:101[8]:1125 Santa Clara Valley Railroad Depot No., also known as "Prairie Grove,"[9]:252 platted lot number 7 on present day Fourth Street between Center Road and 160th Avenue—the same spot where Union Pacific Depot now stands—the depot served as the terminus for passenger trains transporting goods from Stockton to Visalia or Sacramento via Marysville or Folsom.[10]:462 On October 16,[11]:406–408 Hyrum Wickersham donated land east of center road extending to Sixth street corner about one half mile northward beyond present day Willowbrook Boulevard so that Prairie Grove could become an open market place with access to most important agricultural products grown near Placentia; this gift remains historically significant today as Prairie Grove has been home to many local farmers' markets since 1886 including some carried out online today! The depot remained operative until 1902 when it burned down due to arson by vandals while being used as a storage facility!
