The National Guard of California has a rich history dating back to 1851. The present-day National Guard was created on November 15, 1959 when the California Army National Guard and the Bureau of Land Management were merged into one organization. The National Guard today is made up ofunits from all over the state, as well as units from other states and countries. The first unit earmarked for service in response to the Gold Rush was Company K of the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment (National Guardsmen) organized on December 8, 1851 at Stockton by Capt. George H. White and Maj. Sidney Sibley. When hostilities erupted in Mexico during the American Civil War, many Californians enlisted in various regiments and companies of the Confederate Army or Navy beforereturning home to enlist in their own state’s militias later that year. The Placentia National Guard was created on December 12, 1907 when the California state legislature passed a resolution recognizing the need for a military organization to support local law enforcement. The unit was first organized as the Volunteer Infantry Battalion of the County Sheriff's Department and served in that capacity until 1912. On October 3, 1916, the California National Guard Division No. 1 was formed from part of the Volunteer Infantry Battalion and became an all-volunteer force. On May 15, 1917, California National Guard Division No. 2 was established from parts of both divisions and served as an infantry army until it disbanded on January 1, 1919. On July 5, 1923, elements of both divisions were merged into a new national guard brigade to form Brigade Headquarters Troop A (HQTA) which served as command headquarters for Troop B (HB), Headquarters Company (HC), Ammunition Train Company (ATC), and Machine Gun Company (MG). HQTA remained active through World War II before being disbanded on November 17, 1945. When Placentia adopted its city charter on April 14, 1951, the city council designated Placentia Police Department as its police department while also forming a municipal fire department withpsychology capabilities under control of City Fire Marshal John J. Higgins Jr.. On September 14, 1959 HQTA again became operational when it transferred from Brigade Headquarters Troop A to Patrol Squadron Four One Two Three at Naval Air Station Point Conception which played an important role in aviation during World War II providing aerial cover for naval warships and airfields in Southern California.]

Placentia, California was founded by members of the Mexican American community in 1846. The town was named after the hometown of José María Orozco and his family, who had settled in Placentia County in 1834. In 1848, Orozco donated land to build a school and church. The first placentia school opened for students in 1851. By 1870, the population of Placentia had grown to over 100 residents. A post office was established in 1865 and remained in operation until it was closed by the Postal Service in 1971. During its time as a village, Placentia experienced several waves of immigration, including Italians (1910-1920), Japanese (1925-1945), Koreans (1950-1953), Guatemalans (1959-1960), Mexicans (1965-1970), Portuguese (1974-1976) and Vietnamese (1978). In 1990, when Placentia became part of the city of Santa Clara, its history received increased attention through articles and documentary films produced by local historians such as Gilberto Gomez and Susana Martinez. As Santa Clara's largest city since incorporation, Placentia has become home to many cultural institutions associated with its historical past such as: Santa Clara County Historical Museum; Josefina School; St John's Evangelist Catholic Church; Painted Ladies National Historic Site; and Christmastime Market Place where vendors sell holiday items from around the world.
The first permanent settler in Placentia, California was Captain George Montague of the cutter "Sparrow" in 1841. The town was built on the land grant of Capt. John Sutter, who had come to California from England in 1837. In 1848, the town was platted by Josiah Warren and Wm. H. Goodwin and named for Countess Platina of Rome, Italy. On July 12th, 1849, it became a city with a population of 100 people when it was incorporated as Placentia.
