Placerville is a census-designated place in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 5,482 at the 2010 census. By 1870 there were 8 settlements with a population of 400 people all under one roof (). In 1872 placer gold had been found at Anza Creek just north of town (). This led to an intense gold rush that began throughout Siskiyou County; over 10,000 men arrived here between 1850 and 1880 (). By 1850, there were eleven families living in Placerville. In 1865, a post office was established at Placerville and remained operational until 1904. A store and sawmill were built near the present day intersection of California Avenue and State Route 571 in 1868, becoming the first business located within the village limits. In 1886, a school was built within the limits of today's village and served gradeschoolers through high school students. The current primary school building was constructed on California Avenue between State Route 571 and Interstate 80 in 1984-1985.
