The history of the Placerville California Army post goes back to 1851. The first American military presence in what is now California was at Fort Point on the San Francisco Bay. In 1852, an army detachment was also stationed at Monterey. In 1861, General Don Carlos Simón issued orders for the erection of a fortification on Rancho Tuxtla Gutierrez in present-day La Mesa. Construction began in 1862 and was completed in 1863. The fortifications were named Fort Simón and served as a training ground for future Californios during the Mexican-American War. In 1870, an additional army garrison was needed because of tensions between Mexico and America over the issue of slavery. A detachment under Colonel Josiah Bartlett arrived at Placerville and set up camp there until 1871 when they were ordered to move south to Campo de Las Animas near Stockton due to concerns over another possible war with Mexico. In 1872, an order was issued ordering all American forces within three miles of San Diego be disbanded because of increasing problems with Native Americans living near that city limits. The army detachment remaining at Placerville continued operations until 1875 when it moved north to Amador County where it remained until 1886 when it left for good, ending any American military presence in California permanently!
Placerville is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Placerville was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to visit what is now Placerville was Francisco Fortunato on his way from Monterey to Sonoma County in 1769. He named the area "Fresno" after San Francisco and "Madera" after Mission San Miguel de Allende, which he reached on July 29, 1770. In 1846, James Parnell founded a rancho (land grant) called Rancho Nuevo at present day's milepost 452 of Route 66 north of today's Orchard Park Shopping Center. A post office called Nuevo was established in1846, and remained in operation until 1861. In 1882, Jens Jensen started farming here and named his farm Ponderosa Mesa after his daughter's mountain slope near home overlooking their property atop Mount Whitney National Park). In 1916 when placer gold were discovered nearby Quartzsite Gap Road (now CR 395), many people from Placerville moved over to start prospecting there because it would be easier than trying to get rich mining claims all over California given that no state government had any mineral rights for those areas east of Sacramento River except for a few small parcels granted by Captain John Sutter to early Californians such as David Waddell and George Hearn who had also discovered gold thereabouts some years earlier. A surveyor named Harry Ewing led an expedition into these new territories on November 21st 1916 while working for Specialty Mining Company under license from USGS Director William Hines with Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Herron commanding company M1 regiment 8th Infantry Regiment attached and taking geological samples including lead ore near Gold Gulch pit then just south of current day intersection of State Routes 648 & 680 about 12 miles northeast of where they found gold fields later renamed Venture Tunnel Field #1 within less than one week; this field included several menholedepths down deep below water table with hard coal seams grading 1/4 inch thick! This discovery gave birth to what are today known as Midas Mines workings around venturesome prospects starting out at 15 feet wide but gradually narrowing and opening up until reaching 3 feet above water level; finally strike being measured 2 1/2 rods off centerline struck rich american brown coal averaged $5 per tonne!! This opened up what has been Placerville’s most productivemining district ever since with major discoveries made at various points throughout its history including Phelps No 10 Mine (named after local hero Harvey Phelps who helped open up these new deposits), Midas Mines workings around venturesome prospects starting out at 15 feet wide but gradually narrowing and opening up until reaching 3 feet above water level; finally strike being measured 2 1/2 rods off centerline struck rich american brown coal averaged $5 per tonne!!
