The Coast Guard gift history in Placerville, California began on October 15, 1917 with the donation of a lifeboat to the City of Placerville. The first Coast Guard Cutter in Placerville was christened HMS "Aurora" on November 10, 1917. The original crew of HMS "Aurora" were made up of five volunteers from Placerville. On December 5, 1937, the city donated another lifeboat to the Coast Guard for use as a floating library and museum. This boat was christened HMAS "Odyssey". On May 2, 1951, HMAS "Odyssey" collided with USS Pueblo (LPH-4) while patrolling off the California coast. Both ships sustained significant damage and Odyssey was eventually scrapped in Australia. On October 15th, 1967, the city donated a new Coast Guard Cutter to the Coast Guard for use as an Auxiliary Patrol Ship. This ship was named HMCS "Cascade". In 1978 she became part of COMMAND POST - THE PACIFIC COAST GUARD'S FIRST UNIFORM FLEET COMMUNICATIONS CENTER (PACIFICA COMPANY). In 1990 she was decommissioned and sold to Korea Shipping Corp.. She served as their flagship until her loss in 1995 when she sunk near Seoul harbor after becoming trapped by ice pack during a winter storm. In 2000 USS Constitution Museum Foundation purchased HMCS "Cascade", which arrived back in town and spent two weeks being restored before recommissioning on July 1st 2001 as USCGC Noble (WHEC-3). She served with distinction having been involved in multiple deployments including Operation Neptune's Spear during September 11th 2001 and force protection operations off Waco TX on February 26th 2002 . She returned home successfully after spending over 12 years at US Naval Station Yokosuka Japan .

The population of Placerville was estimated at just over 8,000 in the early 20th century, but has since shrunk to around 1,500 residents. The town is currently served by one school and two churches. Placerville was founded in 1879 as a sheep ranch on what is now the western edge of downtown Placerville. At first, the town consisted of a few homes and a store. In 1916-17, when war began between Mexico and America (the Mexican Revolution), many Americans decided to flee Mexico for Arizona Territory because they felt their homes were being seized by the Mexican government without due process or compensation. This migration led to increased trade between San Bernardino County (where Bakersfield County was located) and northern Baja California Territory which included parts of today’s California; this called for new towns to be established along routes connecting these areas including Fresno (then part ofooBakersfield), Needles (later Arroyo Seco), Anzavillea (now Del Norte), Yuma (later Redding) and even Carson City (now Carson City). One such route crossed into present-day Bakersfield County through Querétaro near where present day Highway 66 meets Interstate 5 south west from Phoenix AZ
