Placerville, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley, about 30 miles south of Modesto and 40 miles north of Fresno. The population was 7,475 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1851 by Mormon pioneers as Placerville Utah Station. In 1867 it became an incorporated town when a group of Latter-day Saints moved there from Salt Lake City. The first post office was opened in 1870. The name change came about because residents thought that “Valley” would sound better than “Placeterville”, since valley meant lowlands and “Placeterville” suggested a highland settlement. In 1916 Placerville had 1 grocery store and 6 houses, while its population was only 100 people. However, during World War I Placerville served as an evacuated base for American troops fighting in Europe; by 1919 its population had grown to 350 people and it had two stores and 10 homes. In 1925 the platted area around present-day Placerville became part of Fresno County after California statehood. Kapp and his wife Althea on a small farm near what is now Interstate 15 and Placerville Avenue. The town quickly became an important trading center for miners in the Gold Rush era, and its many businesses helped to drive prices down for goods sold throughout California. In 1875, the Kapp family donated land to make up for the loss of their home in downtown Placerville when an oven belonging to their grocery burned down. The first post office was established in Placerville in 1876, and it remained operational until 1959. In 1916, Placerville became part of Riverside County and played a minor role until 1951 when it became its own county seat. Since then, it has been very active in local politics with several annexation requests made over the years. Today, Placerville is known for its beautiful architecture including some of the most impressiveadobe Mission Revival homes on National Register of Historic Places listings (NRHP).
