Placerville is a small town in California, located about an hour's drive from Sacramento. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent residents of Placerville were two brothers who came to live on the outskirts of town in 1859. In 1872, C.L. Smith and his brother started a successful grocery store in what is now known as the Smith Building on Main Street. By 1888, when Placerville incorporated as a village, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1889, George Hutton opened the first post office in what is now Placerville and served until 1914 when mail service was discontinued due to budget cuts by then-Governor Hiram Johnson. In 1916, Jens Jensen (a Norwegian immigrant) founded the Jensen Rubber Company which became one of America's largest producers of rubber products before merging with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1951. It wasn't until 1959 that Placerville became home to its own hospital when Kaiser Permanente bought land adjacent to the old Baptist Hospital for $2 million ($ today). Today Kaiser Permanente operates both facilities - one providing primary care services and another providing maternity and pediatric care. As well as being a center for art and culture, Placerville also boasts world class golf courses including The Country Club (established in 1915), Olympic Hills Golf Course (opened in 1984), Rte 95 Mountain Course (opened in 2001) and Redwood Hills Golf Course (opened in 2006). Placerville became part of Contra Costa County and was initially served by a post office called Fillmore. However, because Placerville was located on a main route linking San Francisco with Sacramento and other points east, it grew quickly into a thriving center for commerce and culture. The arrival of automobiles led to dramatic changes in local demographics; development slowed until World War II when plats were re-erected around downtown to accommodate more residents.
