Since then, many different businesses have operated within the walls of Thetis Trading Post Ltd., which has been home to locals since 1938when it reopened following a fire that destroyed most of its predecessor’s building nearby. Today Thetis Trading Post is one of Placerville’s oldest businesses still functioning as a full-time business with over fifty years' experience serving local merchants and visitors alike! Placerville, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Chico-Redding Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Placerville has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The first Europeans to visit what is now Placerville were Spanish missionaries in 1821 who named it San Miguel de Allende after their religious leader, San Miguel Arcángel. In 1864, Jens Jensen began his own cattle ranch here and donated land for a post office and school district. In 1868, Captain John Sutter founded the city of Bakersfield on his ranch east of present day Placerville. Sutter named the new city after him because he believed that Bakersfield would become an American outpost connecting Sacramento with Los Angeles via the Santa Ana River Valley. The first post office was established at Slocum in 1871; it became known as "Pleasant Prairie." A placer mine operated near Slocum from 1865 until1872 when gold started arriving here from nearby Butte Mountain range by wagon trainloads. A store built on Main Street in 1870 by Wm Hickey became one of the most famous businesses in Placerville; its merchandise included hardware, groceries, seed supplies and other items favored by farmers across Kern County during this time period. A grain elevator was built west of Main Street in 1902 by Jens Jensen to process agricultural commodities brought overland from Northern California through Sonoma County into Kerneland markets such as Yuba City and Madera before being shipped downriver to Bakersfield where they were sold or used as animal feedstock for local livestock production or turned into flour for local breadmakers before being exported back upriver again.
