In the early 1900s, Placerville was a small town in Butte County, California. It was located on the banks of the Sacramento River and it had a population of about 1,500 people. The town had a small military installation known as Fort Macleod. Fort Macleod was built in 1854 by General John Blythe for the Republic of Texas. It served as an artillery post and garrison until it was abandoned in 1906. The fortification at Fort Macleod played an important role during World War I because it provided defense against Confederate forces trying to cross the river into Northern California. The fort also housed a detachment of United States Marines who were used to provide law enforcement and security outside of San Francisco during the war. After World War I, Fort Macleod reverted back to its original function as an artillery post and garrison. It remained in use until 1966 when it was decommissioned and sold to the Placerville Municipal Utility District for use as a municipal storage facility.
