The Navy has a long and proud history in Placerville, California. The navy ship USS Constitution was first commissioned here in 1846 and served in the Mexican-American War. After that, the navy ships USS Maine (1855), USS Sacramento (1872), USS Mobile Bay (1904) and USS Enterprise (CVN 75) were all built here. The Constitutions were then decommissioned in 1936 and stored away until 1946 when they were reactivated as the PT boat PT-109. This was followed by the PT-119 which served until 1957 when it was decommissioned again. In 1978, the navy reactivated two of their old PT boats as PT-145 and PT-147 to serve as dive bombers for naval aviation training exercises off Point Conception. However, these boats were quickly lost at sea after only a few months service. In 1984, four new destroyers were ordered from Raytheon Shipbuilding company for use by the navy in Operation Neptune’s Spear during anti-drug operations off Panama City Beach. The new destroyers were christened USS Enterprise (CVN 78), USS San Francisco (CA 44), USS Tacoma ( WA 90) andUSS Wasp_(DE 355). These vessels arrived here in 1987 and continued to serve with distinction through most of1988 before being decommissioned again due to budget cuts within the navy. In 1995, three more destroyers – USNS Nevada(LHD 3), USNS Miami(LHD 6)and USNS North Dakota(LHD 8) –were ordered from Raytheon Shipbuilding company for use by the navy during Operation Just Cause against Nicaragua’s government forces prior to its UN vote of no confidence on October 20th of that year which led to sudden military intervention by Costa Rican president Oscar Arias Varela seeking revenge for his country’s treatment at the hands of Nicaraguan forces while under U.S protection.] In 1998, one final destroyer –USS Mesa Verde(LHD 10)]–was ordered from RaytheonShipbuilding Company for use by Naval Aviation Training Forces conducting flight training exercises off Point Conception prior to becoming operational with CVN 72 on July 1st of that year.] Today there are over 350 Navy Ships stationed around our world providing sailors with life saving assistance should something happen ashore or afloat outside our shores! Placerville is a small town in the California foothills, located about an hour south of Sacramento on Interstate 5. The population was 2,474 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Placerville's early history can be traced back to 1847 when three men - George C. Smith, John Withers and James Fenton - purchased land east of present day Placerville Avenue from the Lodi Sac & Land Company for $1 per acre ($10 per square mile). The community began as a two-building Adobe house built by these men and their families in 1849. By 1870, placer gold had been discovered in the area making Placerville an important center for mining operations. Goldmining continued until 1912 when quartzmining became more common in the region; however, Placerville remained an important center for agriculture until 1915 when a new irrigation canal wasbuilt leading to farmland west of town. In 1930, Placervillepostal service began with the opening of the first post office in central California (the predecessor to Union Pacific Railroad). By 1940, placer gold had stopped being found and most residents abandoned their homes to live near continuous agricultural production or within commuting distance of downtown Sacramento. However, some residents returned to live closer to their mining jobs after discovering that they could still earn a good wage doing so. In 1957, voters passed a local option measure giving them control over fire protection services; this led to increased development around town andplaque marking various milestones in local history are now ubiquitous throughout town including: Pioneer Hall (1849), Masonic Lodge #4 (1907), Community School District No 1 (1930), American Legion Post #2(1945), First Baptist Church (1957) and Calvary Lutheran Church-(1959).
