Placerville, located in the southern San Joaquin Valley of California, is a small town that has been around since 1878. The town was named after George Washington Platt, who owned land in the area. In 1865, Platt and his son-in-law James Irvine founded the first post office in the area. By 1870, Platt had started a flour mill in town and by 1882 he had opened a store. In 1886, Platt donated $10,000 to build a school in town. The school was built on the site of today's Placerville High School. By 1907, there were 11 businesses in town and 2 banks. The population of Placerville peaked at 907 in 1920 but dropped to 711 by 1930 due to prohibitionism. With Prohibition gone and other industries starting up (like lumber), growth resumed until 1945 when World War II intervened and destroyed much of what had once been here. Today, platted areas remaining from early days include: North Park (later part of Claremont), East Park (later part of Redding), South Park (later part of Porterville), West Park (later part of Fresno) as well as old homesites along creek corridors that run through the townships: Gold Hill(1904-2006), Oakdale(1905-2006), Silver Lake(1915-2006) and Cottonwood Heights(1921). The downtown core remains largely unchanged from its earlier years with local shops/restaurants clustered around two central square blocks which remain business district landmark sites today - The Alley Inn & Pub on Main Street between Sutter Boulevard and Broadway Avenue; Lion's Den on Telegraph Avenue just east of I-5 south bound; also note two other older buildings dating back to at least the early 1900s - Hitching Post near present day Route 66 westbound exit off I-5; now home to an antique mall Allmusic awarded three stars out five for "A Place Called Home" describing it as "a warmhearted snapshot from past times." This warm feeling can be found even today where many businesses still persist despite difficult times including several restaurants that have closed or relocated due primarily to cost overruns associated with state mandates related to food safety laws changed during this time period like SB 822 which requires restaurant kitchens must meet certain specs such as having spares for cold tools & proper ventilation etc...
