Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and bordered by Bakersfield to the north, San Bernardino County to the east and south, and Tulare County to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pleasant Hill has a total area of , all of it land. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasant Hill were Spanish traders in 1821. A Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in 1827 and soon after mission bells were rung throughout much of central Kern County as signals for Rancho Adobe (now downtown Bakersfield) residents to come gather honey from wild bees hives near Adobe Creek. Because there was no water available irrigation began on large tracts of land east of Adobe Creek in 1851 by John Sutter, who had acquired Rancho Rincon Franciscan at that time from Santiago Reyes. In 1862 Colonel James Hahn laid out a townsite here with lots numbered 1-9 on what is now Alice Street between Ridgewood Avenue and Fox Road. By 1870 there were over fifty such townsites across Kern County due to rampant speculation led by Hahn's friend David Teague (later mayor of Los Angeles). In 1875 Pershing Downs race track opened downriver from Alice Street where today's Jack London Square stands; this became one of Southern California's most popular gambling destinations during its heyday beginning in the 1880s The community lost some population dynamics as people moved away for suburbanization beginning around World War II when many farmers abandoned their holdings along Red Bluff Road which served as a bypass for military personnel moving through southern Kern county en route northward or southeastward into Fresno or other valleys . But within twenty years following World War II Pleasant Hill had regained its previous population levels with new housing developments starting up along Red Bluff Road outside town limits . However since then things have slowly but surely been unraveling again as more people move back into town generally seeking opportunities for job growth instead of development potential rather than living within walking distance for jobs like they once did
