The community was founded by Mormons who arrived in 1847 and named it after the hill they saw rising to the north. The hill was later renamed Mormon Ridge and served as a military base. In 1942, Pleasant Hill was merged with nearby Arroyo Grande to form Arroyo Grande-Pleasant Hill. The first settlement at what would become Pleasant Hill occurred in 1847 when Mormons who had come from Utah settled on Mormon Ridge near present day Arroyo Grande. They called their new home "Pleasant Hill" because of the high hills that surrounded it. By 1850, there were about 10 settlers living at Pleasant Hill. In 1852, the U.S.-Mexico War began and the residents of Santa Barbara County fled to arid Rancho Mirage where they raised cattle and built homes. In 1862, Mormon Ridge was sold to Ayer Corporal John Bigham for $2,000 cash and 375 acres (160 ha) of land east of downtown Los Angeles including present day Pleasant Hills. Bigham used the land for farming purposes until he sold it to his brother-in-law Willard Richards in 1865 for $4,500 cash plus 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of track leading from Arroyo Grande railway station northwest to his farmstead on Republican Lane today's 3rd Street between Republican Road Junior High School and Foothill Boulevard South elementary school). Richards laid out a town grid on his property which remains largely unchanged today with only minor changes made over time: streets running east-west rather than north-south; a single storey building instead of two; an open cornice around all buildings instead of a protective screen; no fences or gates around properties]; schools - one block away from each other - using log classrooms between classes; churches - built close together - using logs as worship space."
