Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, located on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The population was 5,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera area. The site where Pleasant Hill now stands was first inhabited by the Mono people in 1788 and was known as "Hillsborough". In 1851, it became part of what would be called Fresno County. Pleasant Hill's first post office opened in 1854. The townsite name comes from an earlier settlement called "Hampton", which was located about two miles east of present-day Pleasant Hill on U."County Road" 1 (now SR 8). In 1903, J.B. Hinton and his sons built a sawmill on the north bank of the river near where later stores and restaurants would be built. The mill continued to operate until it closed in 1969 due to injury sustained by one of its employees. Pleasant Hill has had several names over time: Hastings (1858), Hammonds Landing (1881), Hamptonshire (1902), Hampton Roads (1917). In 1916, when it become part of that city's new annexed area along with other smaller villages within that city Limits, it received its current name - Pleasant Hill - after then-Mayor Tryon Wickersham suggested it for all localities within limits who desired such a moniker without having specific request from their respective governing body or residents' association solicitation thereof; Wickersham also being mayor at that time & chairman of City Limits Board Of Supervisors .
