Pleasant Hill is a town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 8,842 at the 2010 census. It is located on the slopes of Mount Wilson and is east of downtown San Bernardino. The first people to live in Pleasant Hill were the Hahns and their children who came from Austria in 1875. The next few years saw many families arrive from eastern Europe: the Fritzes, Schmidts, Lenas, etc., until by 1880 there were over 100 settlers living in Pleasant Hill. The first post office called Pleasant Hill was established in 1887. In 1892 a school was built; it became a high school in 1916 and then an agricultural college (USDA) in 1924-27. In 1907 William Clements donated land for what would become the present day University of Southern California campus; USC moved into its current location on nearby North vitreous hill on October 24, 1913. Pleasant Hill's economy has been based largely upon agriculture since its inception as a small community with only six residents farming over one hundred acres of land back then; however, recent growth has come through intense development around Mount Wilson Boulevard which now employs over 1,000 people directly or indirectly due to its proximity to Interstate 15 and other major highways
