In 1847, Hyrum Smith purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from the local Indian tribe for $10 per acre. He named his settlement "Pleasant Hill" after a hill he had seen near his home in Gloucester County, Virginia. The first post office was established at Pleasant Hill in 1851. A sawmill and grist mill were built in Pleasant Hill between 1850 and 1860; these mills produced lumber for buildings and other products until 1971 when they closed down because of competition from more efficient machines. The last mill closed down in 1978; however, its remains can still be found buried undergrowth off Highway 680 about two miles east of town limits. In 1871, John Sutter founded the City of Concordia which included present-day Pleasant Hill within its boundaries After years of struggle by residents to keep their homes within city limits, Concordia became an independent city on January 1, 1898 with a population of 3,500 people In 1902–1903 developer Samuel Jones built much larger estates called Sunnyside or Sunrise Park which stretched along Interstate 580 to Walnut Creek outside Antioch Following World War II most families moved away as steel production declined around America but some locals bought back their homes during the latter half of the 20th century when prices began to rise again . By 1990 there were only 5 houses remaining on Sunnyside Estate while all but one house on Sunrise Park Estate had been sold or demolished over time . Pleasant Hill is a census-designated place (CDP) in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 8,452 at the 2000 census. The first people to live in what is now Pleasant Hill were the Ohlone Indians who used to hunt and gather food near the present day intersection of Highway 24 and Mineral Road. They used to build huts out of earth and grass which they would repair with leaves when it rained because there was no water. Not far from where this group lived stood an old mill which belonged to Captain John Maynard. He built it around 1795 as a storage mill for his cattle that he had on his ranch in Bee Cave Valley. In 1852, James Fenton bought the mill from Captain Maynard and moved it two miles east to its present location on Mineral Road. In 1859, Pleasant Hill became part of Santa Clara County when California became a state. It remained part of Santa Clara County until 1876 when it became part of Contra Costa County. Pleasant Hill has been home to many families since its early days including those who founded Concordia College (now UC Berkeley), San Francisco State University, Diablo Valley Community Bank, American Express Company and more recently Googleplex, Apple Inc., Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn among others A new shopping center called "The Village" opened up in Pleasant Hills in 2006 adjacent to Interstate 580 just south of Walnut Avenue
