Pleasant Hill, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,820 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan statistical area. Pleasant Hill was founded in 1879 by John Hanks and his family as a small farming community known as "Hanksville." In 1906, Pleasant Hill became an incorporated town after voters approved a proposition to that effect. In 1946, Pleasant Hill was struck by a tornado which destroyed most of the town center and killed 24 people. After years of residents moving away and redevelopment efforts spearheaded by Mayor Harry Reidy (later Governor of Nevada), the population reached 2,000 in 2000. A new shopping center and recreation complex have been built on formerly contaminated land adjacent to the old mill site since 2006. Pleasant Hill is located about 20 miles northwest of Bakersfield on State Route 99W (the main artery running through Kern County). The hills around Pleasant Hill range from gently rolling plains to rugged peaks reaching 6,000 feet (1,800 meters).
