The community name comes from Pleasant Valley, one of several valleys that make up the Kern River watershed. A post office was established in 1872, and by 1886 it had acquired its current name of Pleasant Hill. In 1907, local farmers formed the Agricultural Society to produce hay for local mills and stores. In 1919, following prohibition enforcement in southern California, some residents voted touts (a type of alcoholic drink) instead of liquor for their own consumption because they felt it would be less harmful than alcohol. The agricultural society still exists today and produces hay for local mills and stores. Additionally, Pleasant Hill has become an important center for education with two high schools - Central High School and Pahrump Middle School - as well as a number of smaller schools such as Paradise Valley Elementary School, Mount Carmel Intermediate School, Happy Valley Elementary School and Tomball Intermediate School within its boundaries. Pleasant Hill is a small town in Northern California, located about forty miles north of San Francisco. It was founded by David Strauss in 1853 as a small farming community. The town quickly became known for its beautiful fruit orchards and wine production, and its mild climate made it an ideal spot for growing crops. The town was renamed Pleasant Hill after the death of General Rufus S. Brockway, who had helped to create the Diablo Range National Monument in nearby Redding. Pleasant Hill is located in the Simi Valley region of California. The community was platted in 1887 by George W. Smith, who named it for his wife's birthplace, Pleasant Point on the Peninsula of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Sorenson, who arrived in 1887 and homesteaded about two miles (3 km) east of town on land that later became part of the City of Ventura. In 1889, a school District 2 school opened at the corner of Third Street and Vine Avenue; it remained in operation until 1915 when it moved to La Crescenta High School. In 1911, a new post office called "Pleasant Hill" was established at the northwest corner of Fourth Street and Vine Avenue; it continued to be operated until 1934 when it merged with the then-new San Fernando Valley post office district. At that time, Pleasant Hill became an incorporated town under state law (it had been granted city status only a year earlier). As an incorporated town, Pleasant Hill developed its own government which included a mayor/council and five trustees/officers: three men and two women; all were elected annually without term limits. In 1951, however, due to concerns over population growth within its borders – especially around Mount Wilson Downs –pleasant hill annexed portions of neighboring Encino (the largest city west of Los Angeles) which gave rise to several controversies during the ensuing years asencinos tried unsuccessfully to secede from their larger neighbor. In 1984–85, following passage by the California Assembly of amendments granting township status statewide to any community electing four or more trustees per meeting minimum requirements set forth therein (and increasing voting power for towns), pleasant hill annexed Villa Park which gave rise to another controversy asencinos complained that they had been wrongfully granted territory while villas park disputed whether they actually needed annexation given their current boundaries - including what is now known as West Hills - which encompass most or all OFA territory currently administered by Encino police department .
