The National Guard was first organized in the United States on November 25, 1861. The organization of the Guard was a result of the American Civil War and it played an important role in the war. In order to provide security for Americans, President Abraham Lincoln called for the formation of a national guard. On December 16, 1861, Congress passed General Order No. 10 which created the National Guard with sixty-eight thousand soldiers. The first regiment to be raised was Company D of the 1st California Infantry Regiment on November 8, 1862. On January 3, 1863, Congress authorized ten more regiments and two brigades totaling eighty thousand men to be raised. By 1865, there were over one hundred thousand soldiers within the National Guard system in America. One of the most important benefits that came from creating the National Guard was its ability to mobilize quickly into any situation that might arise during or after the Civil War. This flexibility was vital in providing defense for American citizens during times of peace as well as during times of conflict. In 1866, Congress authorized forty-two rifle companies each composed of three battalions and four brigades total to be raised nationwide under command of state militias (the National Guards). These rifle companies were also meant to serve as mobile reserve units should military action become necessary outside their states’ borders. This organization allowed for quick mobilization into any situation and gave state militias greater control over their local communities when needed than if they had been under Army command alone. The National Guard Gift History in Pleasant Hill, California begins with the formation of the 9th California Infantry Regiment on November 12, 1852. The regiment was mustered into service on December 1, 1852 and served until its disbandment on July 15, 1863. The 9th CAIR also formed part of the California Expeditionary Force which participated in the Mexican-American War from April to September 1846. Afterwards, it was reactivated for a single year and served as an artillery battalion in garrison at Sacramento City. On October 25, 1862, Governor John W. Brown called for volunteers to form a posse to suppress a local uprising by Native Americans known as the Bear Flag Revolt. The posse were organized into two battalions and given the name of “Pleasant Hill Volunteers”. In 1865, the 9th CAIR disbanded again due to lack of recruits and no orders being received from Governor Brown for another year. Governor George Prentice ordered all units back into active military service on January 2nd 1866 when he assumed office after winning the November election. The regiment reorganized under command of Major General James Halleck and fought in several campaigns throughout Northern California before finally disbanding at Stockton on May 5th 1868 having performed over 4500 miles march in just 58 days!
Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, about 20 miles east of Bakersfield. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kern City Unified School District. The first post office in Pleasant Hill was established on March 3, 1892. The name "Pleasant Hill" was given to it by Mrs. Gertrude Rankin after she saw a hill in the area that looked peaceful and serene. At the time, Pleasant Hill consisted of just six homes and one schoolhouse. In 1907, a group of men from nearby rural areas pooled their money to purchase land which they would develop into Pleasant Hill Village. They named their community after Mount Pleasant on Long Island where they had been vacationing during summertime with family and friends. The first store in Pleasant Hill Village opened its doors on July 4, 1907. That same year, the first kindergarten was established in the village with five children from various families coming together to teach for three months every other week while their parents worked outside of town*. In 1915, a new school building was erected in honor of Mrs. Rankin's late husband* who had died young*. In 1924-1925*, four more schools were added to the village; two public schools and two private schools (* These were later closed due to budget cuts). During World War II (1939-1945), many people from around the region volunteered their services and contributed goods and money towards military projectss such as vehicle production plants or tool factories * (* Many citizens also helped build Hoover Dam). After the war ended, most residents returned home but some remained behind to help manage businesses or provide services like lawn care or grocery stores *.
