The first people to live in Pleasant Hill were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near the present day intersection of State Route 99 and Church Street. In 1851, a group of Mormons from Utah came to claim land east of Mount Shasta as part of their new religion. They named their settlement after John Brown's raid on Harney County Sheriff's Office Headquarters in 1859.
