In 1945 only after V-2 rockets had been developed could Japan mount a successful counterattack against American bombers in the form of suicide attacks on Pearl Harbor which destroyed almost all of USS Lexington’s aircraft carrier squadron and killed 160 Americans including 20% of her crew members. Finally conquest through airpower was finally achieved when Japan surrendered at Tokyo Bay on September 2 1945

The Pioneer Theatre is now a museum and has been closed since 1978. In 1925, Pleasanton became home to the first municipally-owned television station in California. KQED (channel 9) operated from studios located on First Street in Pleasanton until 1958 when it moved to San Francisco. The city also renovated and reopened the old San Francisco Examiner building which had been used as an armory during World War II as well as hosting a number of cultural events over the years including performances by Leonard Bernstein and Jane Fonda among others. During the late 1970s and 1980s much of downtown Pleasanton experienced several remodeling projects which added new businesses such as JB Hi-Fi Audio Video Game Store, hardware store G&G Hardware & Electronics, Chinese restaurant Mandarin Oriental Garden & Cafe and various other small businesses that helped to revive what had once been an abandoned downtown area. Downtown's success led to plans for another renovation project which would add more retail space along with new public housing units; however this project was cancelled due to budgetary constraints after only two phases were completed
