Pleasanton, California is a city located in Stanislaus County, California. The population was 54,827 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in the Bay Area of San Francisco and its metropolitan area has a population of 1,510,000. Pleasanton is located on the banks of the River Brentwood which forms part of the eastern border of San Francisco. The town was founded by John Cranch in 1853 as an agricultural trading post on land that he had bought from Juan Bautista Alvarado. The name "Pleasanton" was chosen for its mild climate and wide open spaces. In 1872, Pleasanton became a city when it annexed neighboring townships including Arroyo Seco and Sunol. The first person to live in Pleasanton was Simeon Wylie who settled there in 1852 with his family. Wylie built Wylie's Store which remains a popular tourist destination today. A second store opened up by Leland Stanford shortly thereafter and soon enough other businesses joined in such as The Goodwin Sawmill Company (founded by George Goodwin), J. Prentice & Sons (owned by John Prentice), Drysdale shoes (founded by Elijah Drysdale) and many more! Pleasanton is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 10,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasanton were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They named it "Rancho de los Olivos" after an orchard near their settlement of Rancho Los Olivos (later renamed Livermore). When the Missionaries moved out in 1836, they left behind a small community of Mexican laborers called las Aguas Calientes which means "the hot waters". This name stuck and when the railroad came through in 1859, locomotives stopped at las Aguas Calientes for water before continuing their journey north. A post office was established at Pleasanton on May 1, 1861, and remained in operation until it closed on December 15th 1966. The first store opened in 1865 by Wm. Halsey & Son under the name of The grocery store and wagon shop; it operated until 1967 when it was replaced by Pacific Gas & Electric's Alameda County substation across from today's intersection of I-880 and Highway 99W. In 1923 Ahlquist built a home at present day corner of I-880 and SR 16 south of town; he would remain living there until his death in 1984. In 1927 Ginter organized a grain storage company with Jens Hansen as its president which became known as Gulf Storage Company Ltd.; operations began October 1st 1927 located on Railroad Avenue between US 101W and US 401E just east of today's intersection with I-880/Highway 99W. With growth came housing developments such as Seal Beach Estates (1930), Pleasanton Park (1934), Northshore Estates (1938), Sunrise Terrace (1942) as well as stores such as Ahlquist's Grocery Store (1945) followed by PG&E's Alameda County substation (1967). Eastside Mall opened along Interstate 880 in 1987 anchored by Sears followed by JCPenney anchor tenant Macy's Department Store opening December 5th 1992 eventually giving way to Dick's Sporting Goods opening October 24th 2006 leaving only Safeway remaining within town limits since 2009 while Kmart closed its doors early 2011 heralding the end of what had once been one successful shopping center chain operating within town limits
