On October 15, 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces bombed and destroyed 6th Army Headquarters and supply depot at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station in nearby San Anselmo with U-boat torpedoes; this attack killed more than 140 soldiers and civilians including Mayor James Jaffe and many of his city council colleagues who were then serving as military intelligence officer staff members at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station

Pleasanton is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 31,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. The earliest resident of Pleasanton were two brothers, George and Samuel Morse, who settled there in 1847. They built a sawmill on the north bank of the San Francisco Bay and named it after their parents—Pleasanton (now part of Danville). The town was incorporated on October 14, 1882. In 1906, when California became an independent country, Pleasanton became its capital. In 1915–1916, about 1% of all Americans over the age of 16 engaged in organized crime; in 1916 alone, Pleasanton had one "ripper" - Harry Golden - responsible for $1 million worth of robberies in Northern California's Bay Area. Golden's heyday ended when he was caught by federal agents and sentenced to 10 years in prison; his sentence made him ineligible for parole until 2020. One local landmark is Veterans Memorial Stadium which has been home to many different sports teams including football (the first team played there on November 8th 1903), baseball (the first team played there on May 6th 1912), rugby union (the first team played there on November 2nd 1907) as well as other events such as concerts and pageants throughout its history including the current American College Games held every year in early fall. One major attraction for visitors to this city are its numerous parks including Jack London Square located just south of town off Interstate 80A from where you can get a great view down San Francisco Bay towards Oakland or just out into rural Contra Costa County if you want to explore more off-road options within easy driving distance like Menlo Park or Brisbane Lakes
Pleasanton was founded in 1879 by brothers John and George Pleasanton. The first post office was established in 1880, and the town became incorporated in 1891. In 1917, the United States moved its embassy from Paris to Geneva, Switzerland, which made Pleasanton the first American city to have its own embassy. In 1944, the United States Navy's USS Quincy collided with a Japanese tanker near Point Conception, killing more than 100 sailors and wounding over 200 others. As a result of this tragedy, Congress passed the Naval Advanced Research Projects Agency (NARA) Act which gave rise to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
