Pleasanton, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. It is located in Contra Costa County. The first people to live in what is now Pleasanton were the Miwok and Jumano people. They built their villages on high hills near what is now downtown Pleasanton. The first post office was established in 1878 by Leland Stanford Jr., one of America's leading entrepreneurs and railroad promoters. In 1907, Atherton platted a town around what are today South Street and West Avenue, east of Interstate 80 and north of Center Street (later US 101). This new town had three points of sale: Atherton Store, Atherton Drugstore, and Atherton Hotel. The name "Pleasanton" was chosen because it sounded like "pleasant morning." In 1927, when Route 66 arrived through the area, many farmers started moving to the towns along its route because they could get cheaply land for farming on newly created national forests that had been opened up by President Coolidge's New Deal program. By 1941, there were over 100 farms in Pleasanton alone! Many businesses were born out of this growth - such as Alameda Nursery Supply which became Alameda Grocery; or Jardine & Hastings who developed a grocery chain that continues to this day called Jardine's avian food store next door to Dell International headquarters in Menlo Park (now part of Googleplex). During World War II many citizens went into work at Boeing plants or other companies outside the town limits due to military production during the war years. After 1945 most residents returned home except for a few servicemen who stayed on until 1954 when they left for good with the end of hostilities. However some continue living and working here today including several active members of Congress from Contra Costa County! Today, it is the largest city in Stockton County and the ninth-largest city in California. The population of Pleasanton reached its peak in 1951 with over ninety thousand residents. However, today the population of Pleasanton is much smaller with around thirty-five thousand residents. The history of Pleasanton began with James W. Pleasant who arrived in Northern California during the Gold Rush days to start a new life and farm land he had purchased from the Native American people. He named his new town for himself, "Pleasanton", after his home country, England. The first settler's house was built on what is now First Street and Railroad Avenue near where present day Highway 99 meets Interstate 880. In 1868, James W. Pleasant married Nancy Hildebrandt and they started farming their land east of downtown on Second Street which became known as "the heart of Pleasanton". By 1870, they were able to build a log cabin on what is now Fourth Street which served as their home until they moved to their current location west of downtown in 1881 when they acquired additional property along First Street between State Route 508 and Interstate 80 for their new home that still stands today as "The Oaks". During World War II, many citizens of southern Stockton went into service within the United States Armed Forces because there was no way for them to get jobs back home due to war-time rationing policies that affected all aspects of life throughout America including food production (see below). Many local businesses closed down due to this lack thereof available labor; however, some local businesses such as JW Poultry did incredibly well despite being unable to find any replacement workers even though most other businesses failed during wartime times due to lack of demand or simply not having enough employees (see below).
