Its economy relies heavily on software development and IT services; various warehouses are located within walking distance of each other in downtown Pleasanton. According to the 2010 census, the population of Pleasanton was 97% white and 1% or less black or Latino. Pleasanton has a diverse history that can be traced back to its founding as an agricultural community named for its peaceful and rural location near San Francisco Bay Bridge. Samuel Morse (1795-1871) built his first wooden printing press here in 1839 while Alfred Vail (1801-1892) developed a water wheel powerplant that allowed him to produce newspapers from local paperstocks at his new millrace known as Kapp's Creek. Pleasanton is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of San Francisco Bay and is the namesake of Pleasanton Peninsula. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasanton were two Jesuit priests, Father Junipero Serra and Father George De Grave, in 1827. They founded a mission called "San Jose de la Purísima Concepcion" (the Holy Cross Mission). In 1849, they founded another mission called "Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepcion". The original church still stands in downtown Pleasanton. Pleasanton was incorporated as a town on March 15, 1912. A post office operated at Pleasanton from 1912 to 1960; it was moved to Martinez in 1960. In 1925, local developer William Randolph Hearst built him his largest privately funded development - Hearst Ranch - which included much of present-day Pleasanton and portions of Martinez and Brentwood neighborhoods. The area that would become Pleasanton was laid out as an eastern extension of Balboa Park around mansion gardens created by Hearst's developers including: Harry Chandler (founder of Safeway), James Laughlin (founder of Jiffy Lube), Clarence Saunders ( founder of Sears Roebuck & Co.), Sidney Sills (founder of Sams Club) and others who helped create the western edge of San Francisco Bay Area during the late 19th century boom period that followed America's entry into World War I.
Pleasanton was founded in 1859 by Colonel George C. Merrick, a British general and landowner who had come to California as part of the United States military expedition that Peregrine Badger led. The town quickly grew, and by 1870 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1872, Pleasanton became the county seat of Contra Costa County, and its residents voted to name the town after General John Fayette Caldwell, an American hero who had played a key role in suppressing Mexican revolution in California. The first post office was established in Pleasanton on April 25, 1871. The town's first mayor was Wm. H. Herndon. A local flour mill was built around this time and became one of the largest businesses in the community; it still remains in operation today. In 1873, Pleasanton hosted the San Francisco World's Fair which attracted over 200,000 visitors.
