The company became one of Bay Area's largest rubber companies with plants in Emeryville (1901), Richmond (1903) and San Leandro (1905). From 1916 until his death in 1984, Jack Jardine served as president and CEO of Rubber Manufacturers International Inc., one of America's leading rubber manufacturers. The loss to Berkeley Heights came as no surprise to Mayor Harry Heineman who plaqueously proclaimed: "We'll annex 'em if we have to." In 1970, after years deliberations, Contra Costa County voters approved Measure B which gave residents a choice between annexation or merging with neighboring cities such as Oakland or Hayward; both proposals were accepted by county supervisors but never put into effect because opposition arose from some withinPLEASANTON – One Hundred Years Since Its FOUNDATION! Pleasanton is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula. The first permanent settlement in what is now Pleasanton was established by pioneers on July 16, 1847 when three men and their families explored Rancho Esequibo west of present-day Pleasanton. The group named their new land "Salinas" after one of their number, Juan Salinas from Guerrero in Mexico who had donated some land to them for this purpose. In 1848, Captain George Gaskell and his party traveled through Contra Costa County on their way from Stockton to Santa Rosa; they stopped at Salinas for the night on their way back to Sacramento. When they arrived at his rancho (today's North Park), Gaskell reported that he found "a very good place for a station" and offered to sell it to John Day if Day could develop it into a townsite. Day bought the right of way and built a sawmill across the street from where he lived until 1865 when he sold it to Atherton grazer James Fenton who also founded Alameda County. In 1868, two brothers by the name of Hargrave purchased the mill site from Fenton and built a gristmill which became known as Donnybrook Mill after Donnybrook Farm near Rohnert Park which served as its prototype. The firstPost Office was established in 1870 with David Bacheler as Postmaster.; Bacheler moved his office from Donnybrook Mill site to what is now Fourth Street between Center/Park streets in 1872 because there wasn't enough room at Donnybrook Mill for him and his employees plus boxcars transporting mail overland then called "the wagons". After serving as First Assistant Sheriff during Prohibition years (1913-1920) Deputy Sheriff Charles Pahue took over Bacheler's role as Acting Postmaster beginning November 1920 upon Pahue's retirement from full time law enforcement service due to an illness unrelated to alcohol prohibition).
