Pleasanton is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 54,673 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population and has a metropolitan area population of over 1 million people. The agricultural center of Pleasanton was once one of the country's leading wine production areas. As of 2013, it had been ranked as the second most populous city in Northern California after San Francisco. Pleasanton was founded on October 6, 1868 by John Hagee and James Fenton as a small farming community named Hahnville on Rancho Cucamonga Creek north of present-day Pleasanton proper. A post office called Hahnville was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1915. The town site was surveyed by George Armstrong Curtis in 1876 and named for him; he purchased it from Ephraim Dutton for $1,000. In 1877, JOSEPH WALKER opened his wagon shop on what is now Main Street. Walker became one of Pleasanton's early settlers and served as its first mayor from 1880 to 1887 and again from 1901 to 1904. Theodore Roosevelt visited Pleasanton twice during his presidency – once on July 4th 1889 while he delivered a speech at Central High School (now known as Moreno Valley High School) and again during his trip around California that same year when he stopped at old Hahnville where he made an impression with his farmers' talks about democracy being put into practice before continuing on to visit other towns such as Castro Valley (then part of Alameda County) and Monterey (then part of Santa Clara County). Roosevelt also dined with members of the local banking family at their home on Rodeo Drive later that day before departing for Sacramento aboard the USS "New York" en route back to New York City via Hawaii
