The first ship to be commissioned in the United States Navy was the USS Constitution on December 12, 1797. She was a flagship of Commodore John Rodgers during the American Revolution. The first USS Constitution-class Battleship was built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Virginia in 1846. She served as Flagship of Admiral David Dixon Porter during his campaigns against Mexico and Cuba. After her decommissioning in 1865, she served as a museum ship until her recommissioning on October 14, 1917 as USS New York (BB-1). On July 20, 1922, she became a Battleship Museum ship at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where she remains today. The original inhabitants of this area were the Ohlone people who had lived there for centuries before European arrival. One of its first settlers was George Hearn, an American investor who purchased land in what is now Pleasanton from José Joaquin El Dorado for $5 per acre. He named his land "Hearn's Ranch" after himself. In 1851, Pleasanton incorporated as a town under the name of Livermore Valley which lasted until 1896 when it changed to its present name due to local opposition to its previous name being too similar to neighboring San Francisco. The growth of Pleasanton has been linked with two main factors: its proximity to major metropolitan areas and its quality of life relative to other cities in Northern California. Pleasanton was founded by Americans John Sutter and James Watt in 1847, just after California became a United States territory. At first, it consisted of only Sutter's Ranch and Watt's mill. In 1868, Pleasanton incorporated as a city. The city has since grown rapidly with annexations from other counties and towns throughout Contra Costa County. As of the 2010 census, there were 37,421 people living in Pleasanton proper and 527 out of 1,383 businesses in its metropolitan area including 1,045 housing units. The history of Pleasanton goes back to 1847 when pioneers John Sutter and James Watt came to what is now Contra Costa County looking for land to start a new colony following their purchase of Rancho Cucamonga from José Castro y Uribe on December 27th that year. They named their new town "Pleasanton" after General Phil Kearney's headquarters at Fort Sumter during the American Civil War because they felt that within two years they would have surveyed all available land east of Redwood City (now Silicon Valley) so they could establish their claim to that portion of California which was not yet claimed by either Mexico or Spain! What followed were some very hard fought days as both sides brought men and horses overland from points near Sacramento through Central Valley villages before finally reaching Sacramento on January 2nd 1850! This event started what would be known as America's Gold Rush! Over time various communities sprang up around what is now Pleasanton- North Livermore (1850), Belmont (1852), Antioch (1857), Redwood City (1861), East Palo Alto(1862), Crystal Springs (1865), Walnut Creek(1868). These settlements grew because local farmers found good soil hereabouts suitable for growing crops such as wheat, barley etc., while also developing lumbering and mining activities due to recent discoveries within easy reach by roadsteads leading into these valleys from dramatically rolling hills northward whence many valuable minerals had been discovered including gold in nearby Butte County! It wasn't until++1901 when millionaire geologist/ hydraulic engineer Charles Evans Hughes moved his family to this location & developed Hughes Oil Field which led directly to World War I when America needed oil supplies more than any other country!+ On October 28th 1915 paradegoers marched past City Hall downtown featuring Mayor Harry Giannini who had been appointed by Mayor Frank Hirschhorn effective September 15th 1914 after previous mayor James Irvine resigned over political differences with Governor Pat Brown%.+ A $2 million bond issue backed by heavy industry attracted merchants & investors totaling $25 million !! By 1923 retail stores outnumbered manufacturing establishments 62%to 38%. In 1933 WW II began when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in Franklin D Roosevelt becoming President; he immediately ordered US armies into Europe where they invaded Poland; Nazi Germany quickly emerged as an powerful ally; thus WWII ended with Japan still occupying much of Asia even though Roosevelt had Ended World War II
