Pleasanton, California is a city of over 2,000 people located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was estimated to be 10,752 as of the 2010 census. Pleasanton was founded in 1873 by Mormon settlers who moved from Utah. It became an incorporated town in 1914 and a city in 1967. The first policemen in Pleasanton were hired on December 26, 1872 by Captain John Waddell as part of his gift to the town. The first police force consisted of three officers and one constable. After two years of service, the captain resigned and the constable took his place. In 1875, the City Council voted to purchase land for a Police Department which would consist of six officers and a fire engine. The department’s first station was erected at 12th Street and Railroad Avenue. In 1907, Captain Edward Sayers donated five horses to the city for use as law enforcement vehicles. In 1912 Mayor William Hiley approved plans for a new police complex which would include four buildings on Elm Street between First and Second Streets which would house the Administration Building (later renamed City Hall), Jail (later renamed State Prison), Police Department Headquarters (later renamed District Attorney's Office) and Court House (later named Federal Courthouse). Pleasanton is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 24,724 at the 2010 census. It is included within the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Pleasanton was founded in 1847 by Capt. John Sutter and his party of pioneers who traveled down the Santa Clara River from Stockton. At first it was called "Sutter's Fort" because Captain Sutter had promised to give three hundred acres (1 km²) of land to each settler who built a home and named a street after him.
