Pleasanton is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, located about 20 miles east of San Francisco. The population was 16,486 at the 2000 census. The first coffee beans were grown on the site of what is now the Pleasanton Municipal Airport in 1946. In 1957, Angelo Collis founded theAngelo's Coffee Company and began selling ground coffee from a small shop on First Street in Pleasanton. The company grew rapidly and by 1967 had become one of the largest coffee producers in California. In 1983, Don Freeman bought Angelo's Coffee Company and changed its name to Donahue Coffee Associates after his father-in-law, Lou Donahue (founder of Joes Pizza). At that time, Donahue produced more than 2 million pounds (1 ton) of ground coffee per year forunderscore brands such as Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks. In 1990, he soldDonahue Coffee Associates to two other partners, who continued to produce quality coffee under their own names until 2001. From then until 2006, Tim HortonsownedDonahue Coffee Associates before making it an independently owned subsidiary again in early 2007. Today's production takes place at three facilities - one near downtown Pleasanton; one north of Interstate 680; and one near Mountain View/Sunnyvale--all within walking distance of each other.
