It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River and is part of the Fresno–San Joaquin County metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasanton were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The town was founded by James Pemberton in 1868 as an agricultural center on land granted him by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. It became a borough in 1907, and then a city in 1951. Pleasanton is a small city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 18,528 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The City of Pleasanton was founded in 1879 by Captain John Goodwin and his wife, Nellie. The city was named after Pleasanton Hill, an agricultural estate near Fremont. In 1895, local citizens approved a motion to change the name to Pleasanton because "the people here are very much contented with their present situation." A post office was established at Pleasanton in 1896, and the first mayor was James Tingley. The growing city needed more housing and plazas were built around 1907-1910 to accommodate growth. During World War II, bombers from nearby American Airlines Base #1 (then known as Temporary Air Force Station Noordhoff) bombing missions over Oakland destroyed trees that grew near where I-580 now runs. As a result of this bombing campaign against American forces, many homes were destroyed or moved away from their original locations in what is now downtown Pleasanton; most notably 5th Street between Market and Divisadero Streets which became Alameda Street when it changed hands several times before it finally came into its current location in 1978 as part of Interstate 580's widening project In 1958 Local merchants created one of America’s first business districts when they began developing Midtown Plaza adjacent to BART stations BART/ Embarcadero/ 12th St BART/ Powell Park BART/(Alameda)/ Franklin streets In honor of Mayor George Moscone who had championed passage of Measure B which would have annexed Hayward into the City Limits during earlier campaigns throughout Contra Costa County only 3rd Ward Councillor Bob Filner opposed annexation pushing for instead creating a new East Contra Costa Municipal District within City Limits that included portions of Hayward including Fresh Meadows Finally after years of deliberations 4th Ward Supervisor Jeff Adachi along with Mayor Moscone agreed to annex Hayward into the newEast Contra Costa Municipal District effective January 1st 1959 This action made Hayward an official part of Pleasanton Quartzsite History Museum
Pleasanton was founded in 1887 by Captain James H. Richardson and his wife, Fannie. The City of Pleasanton was incorporated on March 15, 1888. In 1902 the city annexed the towns of Highland and Livermore. In 1913 Pleasanton became a part of Los Angeles County.
