Pomona, California is a city located in the San Bernardino County of Southern California. It is the largest city in Kern County and the county seat of Kern. The population was estimated to be 138,711 as of 2010. Pomona has been an important military installation for over 100 years and its history can be traced back to 1852 when it became part of the United States Army's First Infantry Division stationed at Fort Mojave. In 1921, it became part of the Fourth Infantry Division which also headquartered at Fort Mojave. In 1949, it took on its present name of The Pomona Army Depot when it became one of two sites within the U.S Department of Defense' National Security Analysis Center (NSA). The depot hosted a number of different arms manufacturers during World War II including Boeing and Lockheed Martin before becoming involved in munitions production during peacetime. Finally, in 1984, Pomona became home to both Headquarters Marine Corps Forces Pacific and Headquarters Marine Corps Reserve Command with their respective facilities adjacent to each other at Junction City Arsenal which served as headquarters for both commands until they were consolidated under Headquarters Marine Corps in December 1992. The history of gift giving within the Pomona community goes back beyond simply being an military installation or arsenal; gift giving has long been an important aspect native to this region and has often been associated with events such as Independence Day celebrations or Christmas gifts for family members living outside the area. Pomona (population: 30,000) is a city in the northern Mojave Desert of California. It is located about east of Los Angeles and west of Reno, Nevada. Pomona was founded by Mexicans in 1881 as Rancho San Dimas, and became a city on December 5, 1911. The name comes from the Spanish word poniente meaning "backing" or " northwestern" corner of the town site. The city has a rich history dating back to its founding. In 1881, Mexican Americans Pedro Ortiz and José Covarrubias purchased Rancho San Dimas from landowner George Hearn for $2,500 dollars. They named the rancho after Pomona County in southern California where they had been living since 1847. After years of hard work building roads and homes, the brothers sold their holdings to Captain Sam Winchester in 1903 for $25 000. Pomona's first post office was established in 1908. At that time there were only ten residents in Pomona- all farmers who raised livestock and horticulturists who grew grapes for wine production. By 1912 there were over 200 people living in Pomona with vineyards, a library, two churches, two schools, several businesses including an insurance agency and two newspapers- The Daily News and The Republican- both published by Captain Sam Winchester himself. By 1920 there were over 1 500 residents with 100 businesses operating out of town along with fourpublic libraries plus one private library catering to students at nearby State College (now UC Riverside). In 1914 Captain Sam Winchester married his second wife Sarah Jane Dodge; they had three children before she died in 1928 followed by him three years later followed by another daughter before he died in 1951 without any known children still living at home.. His widow Sarah Jane left their 3 daughters sole trustees of his estate which included 600 acres (248 hectares) near Oxnard just north of downtown Pomona.; Sarah Jane also built Dodge House now called White Sands Mansion which overlooks Interstate 880 between Oxnard Boulevard/SR 167 & SR 209 northbound & southbound exit ramps.(the house is open daily 9am to 5pm during winter months.) The sisters controls day-to-day operations while their father's will remains dormant until such time as someone can be found who can heirsize his property according to law In 1916 when Captain Sam Winchester died intestate no probate occurred so property passed directly from father's estate into hands of 3 sisters! continued control through siblings until death intestate
