The Pomona coffee industry began in the late 1800s as a result of the city's rich agricultural history. The first coffee beans were grown on Giddings Ranch, which is now part of the University of California at Pomona. In 1902, Hector Ortiz founded the Oroville Coffee Company and started manufacturing roasted coffees in what is now the Pomona Farmers Market. In 1928, DonatellO Piestre opened his first roastery in Pomona and became one of the largest and most successful artisanal coffee companies in America. Over time, DonatellO Piestre's roasts have been exported to many countries around the world. Today, DonatellO Piestre operates three cafes located throughout Southern California: one in Encino; one in North Hollywood; and one in downtown Pomona.

George Hildebrandt had named his citrus grove Palomas Blancas after his wife's mother and sister-in-law. After years of growth and development within the small town boundaries until 1907 when it became an incorporated city with a population over 50,000 people - Pomona annexed portions of Claremont City two years later - Pomona's growth accelerated rapidly into what we know today as its metropolitan area including Covina and North Hollywood. In 1967 Pomona opened its first downtown shopping mall with more than 130 stores and restaurants including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy’s Inc., Kmart Corporation and 20 other retailers. Today, Downtown Pomona anchors four north–south streets: Euclid Avenue between Orange Street and Ventura Boulevard; Broadway between Olive Street and Center Street; Fallbrook Road east of Grand Ave.;[and] High Street south of Arroyo Drive off Interstate 5 near Honda Civic dealership
