Pomona is a city in the southern region of California. It is located on the banks of the San Gabriel River, and was founded by Spanish settlers in 1777. Pomona became a city in 1911, and was renamed after Pomona City, Arizona, which had been hit hard by the 1906 earthquake and fire. The city has a population of over 200,000 people and is home to several colleges and universities, including Claremont McKenna College, University of California Irvine (UCI), Kingsborough Community College, and UCLA. The Pomona area is also rich in natural resources such as grapes, apples, citrus fruits, soil erosion control products, oil shale deposits, mining rights for silver ore and uranium ore. The history of Pomona begins with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1777 from the Philippines. They named their new land San Gabriel Valley after Catholic Saint George who was martyred at an early date near today's Pasadena. Pomona, California was founded in 1824 by George and Martha Palmer as a small town on the east side of the Santa Barbara Mountains. The Palmers were the first white people to set foot in what is now Pomona. They named their new town after Pomona, Italy, where they had been traveling with their families when they discovered this area of the country. The Palmers developed a small farming community around their home, which became known as "The Gables." In 1826, George Palmer built the first mill in what is now Pomona. By 1830, The Gables had grown into a sizeable village with over 100 residents. Over time, other businesses cropped up in the area: such as a store and blacksmith shop. In 1836, George Palmer married Maria Mitchell and moved his family to nearby Claremont so that he could pursue an education at Claremont College. After one year of study here, he returned home to start his own farm and continue growing crops and manufacturing goods for local merchants. In 1840, George Palmer donated land to Claremont College for enlarging and expansion purposes; this property would eventually become Pomona's central square today. In 1850s-1860s Pomona experienced rapid growth due to its location on well-traveled Routes 101 & 152; trade came through it extensively during these years thanks to its proximity to both San Francisco Bay Area cities (San Francisco) and Southern California (Bakersfield). During these years many new buildings were erected includinginfamously Sidedge Hall - a two story redbrick building that served as an all-night gambling casino/brothel from 1865 until it burned down in 1933 despite efforts by then Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa!
