Pomona, California is an agricultural and ranching town in southern Orange County, California. The population was 23,965 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Orange County after Irvine. Pomona is one of the original towns in Anaheim County. The name "Pomona" comes from Rancho San Bernardino de Anza on the east side of what is now Pomona Avenue. In 1849, Juan Bautista Alvarado granted a land grant to George C. Thomas for $1,000. After resigning his position as Governor of New Mexico, Thomas moved to California and founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico on April 6, 1849. On May 15th of that year he named his new mission after Poma de la Raza (chiefess or wife of God), which was then a term used for Indian women living among white people due to their spiritual power over men.
