The Mormons were interested in starting a new community and wanted to find a way to give back to their community and its residents. They found a site for their town on an old Rancho San Buenaventura estate and began construction in 1848. The first store was built on Main Street in Pomona and was called the Mormon Store. In 1850, the Mormons built a second store on Elm Street which became known as the Christian Store. It was here that Brigham Young met his first wife Emma Hale Smith and married her in 1852. A third store was built at 5th Avenue and State Street which became known as the Old Mormon Store. The Old Mormon Store continued to be used as a shop until it burned down in 1865. The next store building went up at 8th Avenue and State Street which became known as the Republican Store. This building served as both a grocery store and a post office from 1865-1887 before it burned down again. Finally, in 1889, another building was erected at 10th Avenue and Indian School Road which became known as the Pomona Mercantile Company Building or simply theMercantile Building because it housed all of Pomona’s commercial businesses). This building served as headquarters of Pomona’s Chamber of Commerce until 1906 when it burned down due to fire damage. From 1886-1906, there were three stores located within one block of each other in downtown Pomona – Republican, Catholic, mercantile – making this block one of most active business districts in early California! During these years there also arose considerable interest among LDS members throughout Southern California for purchasing property eastward into what is now Orange County (lateradding Riverside County). However, due largely to Prohibition during those years (and related economic factors), no such purchases were made until after World War II when organized religion reemerged more strongly than ever across America! During World War II, many American soldiers came home with money they had earned overseas but not necessarily know how to use it properly back home so they started small businesses or opened banks instead – some successful while others failed miserably (in fact much later local historian Darrell Boren would say that “the prewar period saw little progress…until 1945[when] Palo Alto entrepreneur John Pemberton founded PCL [Palo Alto Corporation]'”)). So while many men returned home with cash flow generated overseas - often headed straight for Wall St - very few actually rented property or established themselves commercially inside our city limits prior to 1945!!! Pomona and his wife Lucy arrived in what is now Orange County from San Bernardino County through the lands that are now Claremont Village and North Claremont Village. The town began to grow rapidly due to agricultural production but also because of new recreational opportunities such as golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, horseback riding stables and more which became available due to the opening of Southern Pacific Railroad lines through Orange County during the late 1800s. In 1905, Pomona- Claremont- Monrovia combined into one municipality though it continued to have its own police force until 1957 when it merged with Orange County Sheriff's Department under then Sheriff Donahue.
