Pomona, California is a small city in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. It was founded in 1872 by John Sutter and his family as a Mormon Settlement on the Paloma Creek. Pomona quickly became an agricultural center with its own Agricultural Reform League, and it has been home to many farmers and ranchers throughout its history. The community currently spans about 12 square miles (30 km2). The name "Pomona" comes from Spanish words meaning "place of figs." In 1951, following passage of Proposition 218 which increased tuition rates at public colleges statewide, Pomona voters passed an ordinance increasing tuition rates at Monterey College to $3 per credit hour from $1 per credit hour. As a result, Monterey College became one of only two Community Colleges (the other being Sacramento City College) in California that charged tuition for undergraduate students full-time during those years! Pomona has been inhabited by the Mono people for centuries and its name means "place of the red bluffs." The first white person to visit Pomona was Captain John C. Frémont on his 1846 journey up the Central Valley from Santa Barbara. In 1862, A.B. Mills founded the City of Pomona and offered it to Frémont in return for his help with selling land in Northern California to settlers.
