The early years of Indonesian independence saw significant growth in both business and population; however stability came only after 1959 when Indonesia transitioned from a republic to an Islamic Republic following military coup d'état overseen by General Suharto

Pomona was founded in 1873 by John Cranch as an agricultural community on a site called Rancho San Bernardino. The town gradually grew, becoming one of the most populous villages in southern California by the late 19th century. In 1916, Pomona became an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people. The original town site was located on what is now Ulysses Road east of present-day Pomona Boulevard. On November 3, 1873, John Cranch donated 640 acres (26 km2) to the City of Pomona for use as a township or village. The land was bounded north by Orange Avenue and south by Sunnyside Avenue and includes all that now makes up Pomona Heights neighborhood on both sides of present-day Orangowood Drive between Euclid Avenue and Fulton Street. At first there were no buildings or residents because only 160 acres (61 km2) had been offered; but within two years construction began on four modest wooden huts which served as homes for many early settlers until they could build more permanent dwellings. In 1916, when Pomona became an incorporated city with a population over 100,000 people, it annexed parts of unincorporated areas including portions of Jurupa Valley to form its new municipal boundaries
Pomona was founded in 1764 by first European settlers, primarily Franciscans. The area that is now Pomona was part of Rancho Cucamonga and later, the land between San Gabriel and Monterey counties was purchased from the Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico Mexican Catholic Church for $1,000 in 1835. In 1856, the town of Pomona was platted. The name "Pomona" comes from a Native American word meaning "place where there are grapes."
