While stationed here for three months during which time he conducted experiments with new firearms and warfare techniques, Commodore Cushing also purchased land from several Indian owners who offered their properties as military encampments for troops stationed in nearby San Diego County while they awaited their national bordersadjustment order from President Fillmore which would eventually lead to California becoming a fully sovereign nation under the leadership of Governor Manuel Micheltorena In 1863, following Valley Forge Campaign where General James Halleck lost more men then he ever anticipated he would, Pomona became one of three major cavalry training camps located along scenic Stanislaus river valley between Stockton and Modesto Counties east of Los Angeles City limits during this period referred to as “the Rancho Period” in honor of General George Armstrong Custer who completed his final stages of recuperation here after being wounded at Little Bighorn Battlefield six months prior while commanding 5th Cavalry Regiment under Major General John Atherton . This cavalry camp served as both depot for horses during peacetime before shipment off to various battlefields around North America including Battle Of Gettysburg where 2nd US Infantry Regiment counted among their casualties; Battle Of Ia Dragahee ( Philippine-American War) where cavalry unit consisting mostly white soldiers working together with Filipino Scouts sought refuge inside fortifications from Spanish Pancho Villa's Army; engagements at Saginaw Hills (1874), Modoc Canyon (1876), etc., until finally closing its doors permanently due to lack of funding/ personnel/location changes in 1895 followingWWI expansion into Central America creating new demand for available horseback troopers throughout Mexico It should be noted that there are multiple documented accounts stating that Pomona actually hosted numerous artillery units during various wars fought throughout Northern California region over many years past without any mention or indication by local authorities other than occasional garrison notices/ maps showing an increased presence or activity near/around current day Claremont Boulevard CA-5 notwithstanding claims by some residentsHistorical marker plaque installed adjacent thereto somewhat inadvertently records such events though not specifically related thereto

The townsite of Pomona was patented to Elisha Gray on October 20, 1865 from Rancho San Luis Obispo de la Cañada (now part of Claremont). From the first days of settlement until the mid-19th century, Pomona was a small frontier outpost with few buildings or people. In 1867, however, A.J. Herriman purchased land east of the present day City limits of Pomona and began to build what would become today's Town Hall and Schoolhouse on lands granted him by Governor Pio Pico. In 1862 Temescal Creek rancher José Baca organized a group that built the first permanent house in what is now downtown Pomona; it still stands today as part of the Antelope Museum complex across Main Street from City Hall. In 1865 when Gray patented his town site to Elisha Gray he named it after his friend General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had died in 1846 while commanding Mexican forces against Federal troops at Buena Vista Canyon outside Tucson AZ.). The name "Cahuenga" means "Willow Meadows" in Spanish and refers to some large Willow trees growing next to Temescal Creek where Cahuenga Valley once stood.
