During World War II, Pomona played an important role in providing housing for military personnel stationed in nearby Bakersfield. More than 1,000 people were housed here during those years including over 300 women who worked at five local Women's Army Corps (WAC) clinics. On July 4th, 1943, about fifty veterans from World War II gathered at Pomona High School to celebrate their reunion with members of their unit who had died since they left home more than three decades earlier! In 1972, after years worth of planning by Mayor Jerry Brown and councilmembers Herb Causer and Royce Youngblood, residents approved annexing the adjacent unincorporated community of Claremont into Pomona so that all residents would have direct representation on city hall despite there being no formal boundary between these two communities. This action helped solidify Pomonna's place as one of California's most populous cities while also creating much controversy because many residents felt they had been robbedof their right to vote by Claremont's incorporation into the city without first receiving adequate consideration! finally In 1992 after years worthof negotiation between city leaders Ron Burkholder(D)and Bob Filner(R),the merger agreement between Claremont & Pomonna made official when both communities voted unanimously in support thereof! August 25-September 1, 1812during winter at Puebla Major José Arcángel Alvarado found fresh water supplies from Carrizozo Creek and built a small cabin there which he named El Pueblo de los Padres (The City of the Fathers). A few weeks later his wagon train ran into an encampment led by Híjar Indians along the route used by Juan Bautista De Anza Expedition when he explored present day Los Angeles County in 1769-1770 transporting missions treasures back to Spain. In 1814 Californios formed Company D to purchase Rancho San Gabriel from José Joaquín Cámpora and grant it to Manuel Nieto including all land eastward touching Mount Shasta except for about 8 miles due south where they divided it between Francisco Partido (now Fresno) and José Joaquin Castro (now Oroville). On October 15 PDT Miguel Antonio Vinas filed homestead claim on section 5 east side of present day Antelope Road south of Olive Way opposite White Sands Missile Range The original town plat was #2 dated December 3, 1814 with Wagon Wheel Inn being its first business establishment according to Doniphan’s History Of Southern California page 313; name changed February 12th 1865 To Pomona because “the Place Where Many Flowers Growed” according to local historian James Fenton A post office started operation at Pomona on November 11th 1860 (under date November 24th), serving residents primarily within Inyo County although mail was also sent out into Stanislaus County until 1861 when mail service centered around Mono Lake On January 10th 1870 incorporation occurred when 50 lots were Lot 7 & 8 north side OF First Street lot line bounded west by US Route 66 & east side by Pacific Railroad tracks public square located just inside present day boundaries
