The Pomona National Guard has a rich history that dates back to 1892. The first national guard unit was organized in 1892, when the California State Legislature authorized the formation of a national guard to provide military protection for state residents. The first members of the Pomona National Guard were sworn in on October 5, 1892. Pomona’s history as a center for Guardsmen began with the establishment of the 3rd Battalion, Pomona Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 14, 1912. This battalion served as garrison unit at Stockton Army Depot from 1912-1914 and then deployed to Mexico during World War I. After returning home, the battalion conducted guard duty at various points throughout Southern California before being disbanded on January 1, 1919. The 4th Battalion, Pomona Volunteer Infantry Regiment was activated on June 15, 1945 and served as an all-volunteer infantry regiment until it was disbanded on November 30, 1968 due to budget cuts. On September 12, 1993 the 4th Battalion’s former headquarters building became part of Homestead Park after it was donated by businessman Don Kirschbaum to the city government of Pomona. On July 16, 1997 two battalions (the 2nd and 3rd) were reactivated from scratch within the Pomona National Guard under command of Major General Wayne Ellerbe and assigned barracks at Veterans Memorial Park in Claremont Hills. These battalions were never meant to be permanent units but rather acted as an extra resource if needed or deployments occurred outside their normal areas of responsibility. In 2002 both battalions amalgamated into one regiment under command of Majors General John Moran and Jeffrey Cramer with Headquarters located at Veterans Memorial Park in Claremont Hills; these changes followed a reorganization within DOD which deactivated many militias across America which had been converted into full time law enforcement agencies such as county sheriffs departments etcetera

The Pomona National Guard currently consists of four brigades, three divisions (1st Infantry Brigade, 2nd Infantry Brigade, 3rd Infantry Brigade), two brigades (1st Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Brigade), one squadron (4th Field Artillery Regiment) and one detachment (9th Armored Battalion).

The first incarnation of the National Guard was organized on July 1, 1792 as an act of Congress under the inspiration of the Second Continental Congress's resolution to "raise a Corps of three hundred men to defend our country against all Enemies without declaration of war." In 1821, the National Guard became an organized service with a definite name and mission: "To Militia for Defense Against domestic Violence and Other emergencies." On Dec. 15, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law legislation establishing the United States Coast guard as part of the Department of Navy. As part of this merger, both agencies merged their forces structure and named themselves The Coast Guard (Navy) . In 1940, both services were renamed The National Security Act officially established the Selective Service System which later became known as TheNational Guard Service

Pomona, California is a city in the southern portions of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 97,561 at the 2010 census. Pomona is one of the most significant communities in Southern California and has been a center for early Californian culture. The name comes from nearby Mount Pomonza, which is said to be the highest peak in that region and to have been named for Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who had an estate there. The area now called Pomona was first settled by Native Americans starting about 1770. A post office called Pomonza was established in 1847, and it remained in operation until 1912. In 1872, Mexican landowner Antonio Palacios bought 1 million acres (400 km²) of what are now Los Angeles County and Riverside County and donated it to the United States as part of Rancho Cucamonga School Land Grant Act. He named his new community after Pomona College—the first American college founded west of the Rockies—which he had endowed with money from his personal fortune. Pomona became part of Los Angeles County on April 4, 1907. It incorporated as a city on November 3rd of that year. On December 15th 1904 Mayor James Matson announced that Pomona would become home to America's first municipally administered electric light system, powered by electricity generated by two small hydroelectric plants located just outside town limits along Deer Valley Creek
