In 1941, PG&E merged with Southern California Edison Company (SCECO) to form Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). As part of PGE's larger effort to improve public services throughout California, the company built several new electric plants including one at Port Hueneme in 1948. During this time, PGE also developed land near Monterey Peninsula for future development into an agricultural area known as Monterey County Agricultural Area No. 1.
