The United States Army began serving in California in 1846. The first military post established in the state was at Fort Yuma, which was located on the border of Sonoma and Napa counties. In 1848, the California Battalion of Infantry was organized at Redding and served throughout the Mexican-American War. In 1861, following the American Civil War, the U.S. Army arrived in California to help support General George Bancroft's efforts to gain control of Central America. The regiment that arrived in Port Hueneme was 1st Battalion, 6th Regiment (Cadet Corps), American Volunteer Infantry. This battalion fought during three months of combat against Confederate forces near Placerville before being disbanded on October 25th 1861 due to its low numbers and lack of equipment. Following their service in California, 1st Battalion 6th Regiment (CW) left for Oregon Territory on December 9th 1861 en route to fight for Lincoln in the First Civil War as part of Brigadier General John Doster's brigade detailed to reinforce General Don Miguel de la Madrid's army besieging Sacramento City from February 1862 until April 1863. After spending two months siege fortifying Sacramento City from March 1862 until May 1863 under heavy Confederate fire, 1st Battalion CW returned home arriving at Alameda County on June 10th 1863 having performed satisfactorily their duty as part of Doster's brigade throughout his stay with Mexico City garrisoned by Union troops under Major-General Edwin Sibley and Lieutenant Colonel David Hunter. This unit participated extensively throughout both wars with engagements taking place at Monterrey Bayou November 12th 1862; Battle Of Palo Alto March 23rd 1865; Santa Clara River Bridge April 27ths 1865; battle At Resaca de Palma September 16TH 1865 where they lost a total of twenty five soldiers killed or mortally wounded making them one of only two battalion sized units casualties during any campaign within three years during the American Civil War... 1st Battalion CWs final tour came during Reconstruction following the war when they were mustered out and folded into Regular Army units stationed along US-Mexican border including: 83rd Brigade (CW) - San Diego County; 134th Brigade (CW) - Monterey County; 149th Brigade (CW) - Tulare County etc.; finally disbanding at Camp Roberts January 17TH 1870 along with all other volunteer infantry regiments except 2nd Battalion Kansas Volunteers who later reorganized as 2nd Cavalry Regiment).

Port Hueneme is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern tip of the San Gabriel Mountains and is bordered by Los Angeles to the south and east, Santa Clara County to the north and west, and Simi Valley to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Port Hueneme were Spanish missionaries in 1795. In 1821 Mexican land grant "los Encuentros" was sold to Captain José Maria del Valle who named it after his father-in-law Manuel Hueneme (1768–1839), captain of one of several vessels that made rendezvous with Commodore John F. Stockton's Cumming Expedition during its exploratory venture of 1824–25. On July 25, 1828 Juan Bautista de Anza founded Presidio de la Bahía de Monterey onshore about five miles northeast of present day Port Hueneme when he discovered an open coast rich in coal resources. The area became known as Rancho Monterey y Costilla (Rancho Costilla) after Don José Guadalupe y Costilla (1799–1872), first ad interim president of Mexico City from 1840 until his death in 1851; he donated 350 acres (1 km2) for a mission church, monastery and school on November 12, 1830; this donation also included land for a toll road connectingpresentday Los Angeles with Monterey Harbor. In 1850 prospectors discovered gold near present day Atascadero Creek while working under Lieutenant James Wickersham on US-4 between Atascadero Canyon and Santa Barbara Channel; Wickersham named part of this area Isla Vista because he believed Saint Veronica would be found thereabouts. Mining operations began at Isla Vista on October 15th, 1850 by Jno.[Pg 7] C[harles] H[eingston], David B[urley], Simeon Warner,[8] John P[eterkin]. The first strike resulted in $5 per ton gold! soon numerous Mexicans were hired as assay men methodically checking claims along both sides ofthe creek bed againstcuttings taken from various hills nearby including Mount Wilson which had been named for George Washington Irving’s father-in-law Augustus Willard Norton (1784–1848). These men got their name from a report they made back home about finding “a vast massiveness [of mines]…to be seen over all” although no coins or other valuable items had been unearthed thus far! A second strike occurred two weeks later producing $10 per ton but within three months most everyone had left for new fields . By September 30th 1860 only six men remained at Isla Vista - Jno., David Bruce/Warner Brothers & Co., Simeon Warner/Pete Brownell/Alfred Hitchcock,[9][10][11] Hiram Maxim who opened Maxim’s Mines next door

Port Hueneme, California was a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California from 1887 to 1995. It is now known as Redondo Beach. The town was originally founded by Spanish settlers in 1795 and named after Port of Spain on Trinidad. The first post office in Port Hueneme opened on July 3, 1887, and the first store was operated by J.H. Powers. In 1890, the town became an incorporated village when it annexed parts of neighboring Pasadena and Covina. The population of Port Hueneme peaked at 10,000 in 1925 but rapidly declined due to World War II and other factors such as subdivisions and development around it. After 1945, the population gradually shrunk again until it reached its current low levels in 1995 when it had only 1,847 residents according to the US Census Bureau. The port of hueneme handled a variety of goods including agriculture, lumber, fishing and shipbuilding during its peak years but has since been supplanted by container shipping which accounts for most economic activity today within the city limits of Redondo Beach. Some remaining businesses that operate out of or near the old port include: Hecht’s Department Store (now run by Costco),[1]Hueneme's Hardware,[2]Anda’s Mexican restaurant,[3][4]Boatyards Incorporated (now closed),and Pritchett’s Pharmacy.[5] During much of its history there were few public schools in town; instead private academies educated students from ages six through eighteen who could then attend local colleges such as Centenary College or Pomona College if they desired afterwards). However starting in the early 1990s public education began returning to Port Hueneme with Lighthouse Middle School open for grades 7-12 beginning September 1994; this followed a similar opening at Harbor View Intermediate School which served grades 9-12 from 1984-1994 before being shut down due to lack enrollment[6]. Another multi-purpose school also opened up recently called John Lennon Middle School serving students K-8th grade which is located just east side off Ivar Sjoberg Boulevard across from North Hollywood Mall convenient for parents travelling into town for shopping purposes or simply taking their children along on field trips with no lunch breaks! Recently there have been plans announced by both City Councilmember Danae Torres[7] & Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa [8][9][10][11][12], among others to build new high school/old port facility adjacent to North Hollywood Mall with classes starting fall 2018 thereby adding even more choice for students attending either high school or college nearby! Despite these efforts Portshuenema remains largely commuter suburbia devoid even remotely resembling anything like a “community” center typical found throughout most coastal cities
