Port Hueneme is a small city in southern California, located on the American River. The population was 12,853 at the 2010 census. The city became a port when the US Army built an airfield there in World War II. The first Europeans to visit Port Hueneme were members of the Spanish exploratory party led by Hernando de Soto in 1542. In 1821, Captain John Copley sailed downriver from San Francisco and anchored at anchor near present-day Morro Bay for supplies and exploration before sailing upriver to Yuma Creek where he founded modern-day Phoenix Arizona. On July 29, 1824, Commodore David Dixon named it Punta Honda after Rear Admiral José Antonio Ponce de León who had commanded Mexican forces during the Buena Ventura Expedition against Mexico's interim government under Napoleonic France (1817-18). After Californian independence was proclaimed on September 17, 1846, Port Hueneme became part of Mexican territory along with other towns in what is now Orange County. The USArmy Airfield at nearby Point Mugu served as an important center for military operations during World War II; it was later used as an airport for Santa Ana and Riverside counties until it closed in 1991. During this time, many jobs that generated wealth within the local community were created such as shipyards manufacturing warships and fighter aircrafts; auto plants producing trucks and cars; paper mills making pulp products; cotton plantations growing crops such as rice and beans; dairy farms raising cows or pigs; dog farms providing animal husbandry services to residents; citrus groves fruitpacking factories producing oranges juice concentrate etc.; commercial fishing vessels engaged in Salmon fisheries off Long Beach Island while also conducting oceanographic research.. Port Hueneme was established in 1887 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his wife, Jeanne de la Mothe. The town was named after the Spanish port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It became an incorporated town in 1907. In 1916, Port Hueneme joined the United States as a municipio. The first post office opened in 1917. The navy built a naval base here in 1922 and served as the primary naval training ground for the San Diego Naval Base until 1945; it also housed a civilian air traffic control tower from 1941 to 1945. In 1946, Port Hueneme lost its status as municipio and reverted back to an unincorporated community with a population of about 1,000 people. In 1984, Port Hueneme was renamed after Mayor Donny Youngquist of Los Angeles who had died that year at the age of 71 years old. Additionally, the city council decided to rename some streets within the city limits after prior mayors or other individuals who had made significant contributions to the development of Ports Hueneme or San Marcos Springs such as James Sorensen (1912-1966), Cesar Chavez (1938-1982), and Jack Kerouac (1921-97). Today, Port Hueneme is home to over 4,500 residents and is one of southern California's most vibrant communities with many businesses and services available online/offline including retail/service industry businesses such as clothing stores/boutiques/, grocery stores/, banks/check cashing services/, software companies/, pharmacies/.
